Embassy of Switzerland to Italy, Malta and San Marino
Happy National Day to Switzerland and all friends of Switzerland
Dear fellow Swiss citizens in Italy, Malta and San Marino, dear friends of Switzerland,
We are pleased to address you on the occasion of our National Day.
Every year, we celebrate the 1st of August by commemorating the founding of the Confederation in 1291. This date goes back to the first pacts between the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden that formed the nucleus of today’s Switzerland, which took shape over the course of over five centuries.
Today more than ever, this anniversary is a time to celebrate our Country and its values: innovation, stability, integrity and the ability to look at the future. Those are values that all of you, the Swiss community abroad, represent every day.
This year, once again, we feel close to you. The last year has confronted us with a crisis that has changed our lives and made us more aware of the importance of human connections. The challenges encountered have highlighted the importance of the relations between our Countries, as our joint efforts during the first months of the pandemic have shown.
But now we want to look forward, hopeful for a brighter future.
Best wishes to you all for a happy National Day!
The Embassy of Switzerland to Italy, Malta and San Marino.
