Historically, the first of August refers to the founding of Switzerland which took place in 1291. A historic alliance was concluded by the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden 730 years ago.
Each year on this occasion, the President of the Swiss Confederation delivers a speech on the Rütli, where – according to the legend – the pledge of alliance was pronounced. Traditionally, bonfires are lit and fireworks are set throughout the country, while flags are hung from buildings and houses.
Happy Swiss National Day!
