Embassy of Switzerland in Qatar
Short Address to Swiss Citizens in Doha
Liebe Landsleute, chers compatriotes, cari compatrioti, chars cumpatriots,
Let me briefly address you on the occasion of the 730th Swiss National Day celebrated on 1 August.
As you will remember, the date is inspired by the signing of the Federal Charter of 1291, Pacte du Rütli, placed in “early August” when “three Alpine cantons swore the oath of confederation” (Schwyz, Uri and Unterwald). This action later came to be regarded as the founding of Switzerland. Swiss citizens in their home-country and throughout the world, where around ten percent of our countrymen and – women reside, proudly remember the founding of their ancient community.
Due to the challenging pandemic situation in many parts of the world with restrictions, many of you were not able to travel to Switzerland to commemorate with family and friends left behind. I admire your resilience, discipline and patience – qualities which are profoundly Swiss.
I trust that this summer you will once again enjoy festive gatherings and open air events with traditional Swiss food, paper lantern parades, bonfires, hanging strings of Swiss flags, and fireworks. You will once again be able not only to see your loved ones through Skype calls but share real life experiences to be cherished and remembered for years to come.
Please trust that your embassy in Doha – as far as restrictions applicable allow – will once again organize cultural events, a belated National Day celebration in November and the traditional Santa Claus reception, particularly popular with the kids, in early December.
Together with my wife Junko and my colleagues I look forward to seeing you all again this autumn and to offer new opportunities to meet old and make new friends.
I wish you all happy summer holidays and a memorable National Day 2021 !
Edgar Doerig, Ambassador
